BINOMIAL NAME:
Pan Troglodytes
ANATOMICAL PROPORTIONS:
3-4.5 ft. tall/ 57-110 lbs.
POPULATION (APPROXIMATE):
100,000-200,000
CONSERVATION STATUS:
ENDANGERED
DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT:
Rainforests, mountain forests, and savannas, in eastern and central Africa (mainly in the countries of Tanzania and Uganda)
DIET:
Mostly vegetarian (fruits, leaves, nuts, tubers, stems, buds, and resins), insects (termites and ants), and whenever possible, meat (mostly other, smaller primates)
SPECIES THREATS:
Chimpanzees are yet another species suffering from massive habitat loss. Human encroachment is therefore a major factor in the decline of this primate.
In addition, chimps are frequently targeted by the bushmeat trade, which is widely practiced across the continent of Africa. Bushmeat is the practice of killing exotic and often endangered species, for their meat---this meat is either considered more economical, a delicacy, or a status symbol (in some local and international cultures).
UNIQUE FACTS:
By now it is almost common knowledge that chimpanzees are man's closest, living relative. In fact, we share 95%-98% of our DNA with chimps, and they are more closely related to us, than they are to gorillas.
Genetics is not the only feature we share with chimpanzees---they use tools, form highly complex social structures, teach culture, and hunt with weapons. Chimps are also extremely emotional, needy, and require a lengthy rearing period (up to seven years).
DEVOTED ORGANIZATION:
Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF)
